One-Handed Touch Typing

by Peter

Most people who want to touch-type with one hand are former two-handed touch typists.

Maybe you’ve broken your arm or finger, and won’t be able to type for several weeks. Or maybe it’s something more serious.

If you’re already a “home row” two-hand touch typist, there’s a great solution for typing with one hand.

The app is called One-Hand Keyboard, and it lets you apply your existing muscle memory to one-handed touch typing.

Your left hand shares muscle memory with your right hand, and vice versa. That means that when one of your hands is out of commission, your remaining hand can actually take over and perform all the typing movements.

Essentially, when you want to type a key with your bad hand, use your good hand instead. Type a key using the same finger, on the same keyboard row, using the same movement. The only difference is that you use your other hand.

This “mirrored” typing technique — using one hand to perform all the standard finger movements — is actually very easy to learn and use. It applies your existing muscle memory to one-hand touch typing.

If you’re normally a two-hand touch typist, you can learn one-handed typing in minutes. Give the free demo version of One-Hand Keyboard a try.

One-Hand Keyboard is available on the Mac App Store. There’s also a free demo version available.

I installed the free version for Mac (Sierra) and it does not seem to be working. Even in the instructions screen I press space + right hand letters and I still get the right hand letters. Is there any additional setting I need to change?
Thanks!

Hi,

Do you have a tutorial for learning one-handed typing? Or is there a tutorial that you recommend for learning one handed typing technique?

Thank you!

This item is not available in the Canadian App store. Is it available / and the trial elsewhere ?
