Typing with a broken arm

Based on Your Existing Muscle Memory

Picture this… Typing with one hand, nearly as fast as you used to type with two hands. Not by looking down at the keyboard, but by touch typing just like you used to. And it doesn’t require lugging around an expensive hardware keyboard. You can type with one hand on your laptop keyboard or any other USB keyboard you want to use.

The remarkable thing is that you already have this skill. If you used to be a two-hand touch typist, you still have that muscle memory. Your typing muscle memory already knows how to type with one hand. Your good hand can pick up the pace and compensate for the hand or fingers you lost.

This is such a godsend to folks who can only use one arm. I wish this was available 9 years ago when I was first injured.

Chris, Brachial Plexus Injury

Who is this for?

Many medical conditions leave one arm in a weakened state unsuitable for typing. People with amputations, brachial plexus injuries, multifocal motor neuropathy, hemiplegia, hemiparesis, or any other such condition all have one thing in common: after a lifetime of using two hands, they now need to adapt to using one.

Or consider a temporary injury such as a broken arm, fractured wrist, or sprained finger. A broken bone would leave your arm in a cast for months. That has a huge impact on your job or education if you need to type every day. Same for a sprained wrist or jammed finger. Being unable to touch type for even only a few days causes a profound decrease in productivity.

Employers know that a fast typist can significantly outperform other persons in both productivity and performance. For employees, higher skill levels translate into higher pay levels. Simply put, higher speeds usually translate into higher earnings.

Why I made this program.

Developer of One Hand Keyboard typing app

Software developers end up doing a lot of typing.

I’ve never broken my arm (knock on wood) but I know it could happen. My livelihood is directly tied to being able to type. Having to hunt-and-peck keys would be a huge productivity burden. My work would suffer immediately. That’s why I wrote this program.

I know how important computers have become in peoples’ lives. My job requires that I type for hours each day, and I know your job might be like that as well. With this program, whatever has happened, you can keep typing fast with only one hand.

Why this one-hand typing method works

This method works because you already know how to type with one hand. If you were formerly a two-hand touch typist, your good hand can take over and compensate for the hand you’re not using. Use the same muscle memory to type with one hand.

  • Regain your typing speed. Type with one hand nearly as fast as you used to type with two.
  • Type with one-hand in any app. Microsoft Word, your internet browser, email, instant messenger… any app.
  • Start typing instantly. You’re not learning a new layout. It’s based on the same muscle memory you used to type with two hands.
  • You don’t need to carry around a specialized keyboard. Use your normal laptop keyboard or any other USB keyboard you want to use.
  • Available for both Mac and PC. Available either as a direct download from my site or from the Mac App Store.
  • Word prediction window as you are typing. Shows all available word prediction options. Pick which word you really want.
  • Quickly switch back to an entirely normal keyboard. Perfect if other family members use the same computer.

If you used to touch type with two hands, you’ll be touch-typing with one hand in minutes. You already know the keyboard layout. With my software you’ll regain your productivity.

Thank you for creating this product. I have used voice recognition software for several months, but one-handed typing is working much better. Voice recognition is erratic and causes my computer to crash.

Does NOT require you to learn a new layout

One-Hand Keyboard uses the same muscle memory you used to use to type with two hands. Typing with one hand requires almost no time spent learning if you were already a two-hand touch typist.

Learning a new keyboard layout takes weeks and weeks of dedicated practice. It’s not worth it. Instead, transfer your two-hand typing skills to start typing fast with one hand in minutes.

I broke my arm in the middle of the school year. I had an essay due in 3 days, and I was not looking forward to tapping it out with one finger. But then I found this app. It was really easy to learn to type with one hand until my arm healed.

Why is this software better?

Maybe you’ve already tried a one-hand typing method. There are a number of them out there.

Unfortunately, most of them are expensive hardware devices that you need to plug in to your computer. No one wants to lug around a weird extra keyboard every time they want to use their laptop. Especially at a coffee shop or library.

Or maybe it uses a completely new layout. They may call it an “optimized” one-hand layout, but the fact remains that it’s new to you! Other methods take weeks and weeks of dedicated practice to become proficient. You’ll be very slow at first, and have to look down at the keyboard. New layouts are simple NOT a viable option if you want to type fast with one hand now!

The one-hand keyboard software here is not a new layout to learn. It uses your existing muscle memory, from when you typed with two hands, so the transition to one-hand typing is quick and painless. You’ll be typing fast with one hand in minutes, not after days or weeks of dedicated practice.

It’s also software that will work with any Mac or Windows PC. It will work with your laptop keyboard, no need to cary around yet another piece of equipment.

The specifics of how this works

This method works because you already know how to type with one hand. If you were formerly a two-hand touch typist, your good hand can take over and compensate for the hand you’re not using. Use the >same muscle memory to type with one hand.

The best part is that all the keys on your good hand are typed exactly the same. Type the keys with your good hand exactly like you would type them if you were still typing with two-hands. For that half of the keys, there’s absolutely no change in typing at all.

  • Always type the keys on your good hand normally.
  • This is easy. Type the keys with your good hand exactly as you would if you were using two hands.

Now for the keys on your bad hand, the hand you’re not using. Instead of tapping those keys, we’ll have you tap an equivalent key with your good hand instead. Tap the key on the same row, using the same finger, but on your good hand.

Your left hand already has the muscle memory to take over for your right hand, and vice versa. This is something that’s built into our brains and muscle memory.

  • For keys on your bad hand, type the equivalent “mirror” key instead.
  • This is the key on the same row of the keyboard, using the same finger.
  • So “E” and “I” are mirror keys. So are “D” and “K”. See how that works? Look at your own keyboard to see these pairs.

So if you want the key “J”, type “F”. Those keys are on the same row, and are both typed by the index finger. So you can safely substitute the keys. Type “F” with your left hand if you want the letter “J”. Type “O” with your right hand if you want the letter “W”.

That’s where this software comes in. It takes the “code” you type with one hand and translates it into the words and sentences that you really meant.

Typing with one hand on a laptop

Typing with One-Hand Keyboard is all muscle memory, you just have to trust your reflexes. It’s surprisingly simple because I used to be a two-hand typist.

I came across your app in the App Store, and thought it an ingenious solution to the problem. I am luckily not in the position of having to use your app, but if I were, I would be conveying heartfelt congratulations… bravo!
